Prelude to the Winter Uprising: Crossfire

In anticipation of the upcoming Indie Game Winter Uprising, xIndies will be looking at some of the quality games that are, essentially, a prelude to many of the titles being brought to you this December. For more information about the Uprising, visit http://www.indiegames-uprising.com/. RadianGames will be releasing Crossfire 2 during this event.

RadianGames' Crossfire is described as "Space Invaders meets Geometry Wars with a twist," and, indeed, that description sums up the aesthetics and essential gameplay nicely. The glowing geometric shapes look fantastic and shooting the back-and-forth enemies stay true to the Space Invader style of shooter gameplay.

But what's the twist? Well, Crossfire incorporates a sort of gravity flip mechanic that I can only compare to that of the NES hidden gem Metal Storm. Adding this warp ability that allows the player to shoot from the top or bottom of the screen changes this title from "Space Invaders with a pretty face" into a totally new experience.

Not to say that the warp ability is alone in making this game great. Full of upgrading weapons, fast frantic and varied enemies, along with super fire and powerups, Crossfire is a game that is hard to ignore. Dig out the quarters because this one is going in the BUY category.

[RadianGames' Crossfire released in July 2010 for 240 msp ($3) and now costs 80msp ($1)]
